Burundi took 18 people suspected of involvement in a failed coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza to the high court on Saturday, relatives of some of the accused said.

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's spokesman said he had returned to the capital on Friday after a failed coup but that the general behind it had not been arrested as he had reported earlier, adding to confusion after three days of turmoil.

An attempt to overthrow Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza ended in failure today as coup leaders admitted defeat and were arrested or forced to go on the run from loyalist troops.
