The Economic Survey presented to parliament today by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recognises the big challenge posed by climate change on India's farm sector and water resources. Groundwater table has been falling and wells, lakes and ponds have dried up in several cities and villages across the country in peak summer this year.

A large number of industries in Ghaziabad are extracting groundwater through borewells installed in their premises, causing depletion of the water table, the National Green Tribunal was informed today.

Delhi needs to develop 44 small dams in forest areas and 480 new waterbodies to recharge the depleting groundwater table, besides making it mandatory for residential and commercial complexes measuring 500 square metres or more to have rainwater harvesting facilities, a study commissioned by the AAP government has said.

The water table in as many as 249 villages in Marathwada region, reeling under acute drought, has depleted to such an extent that farmers there will have to wait for the next monsoon cycle for ground water levels to rise.
