Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Friday said the state has cleared its entire electricity subsidy bill of Rs 20,200 crore for the last financial year and has witnessed a jump in excise and GST revenue.

The GST Council on Tuesday approved changes in tax rates on some goods and services while allowing states to issue an e-way bill for intra-state movement of gold and precious stones, officials said. It was the first day of the two-day meeting of the GST Council which is headed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and is going on in Chandigarh.

The finance minister said she wondered why the Opposition leaders did not speak in Parliament when the bills were being discussed.

The Goods and Services Tax or GST which was implemented in July 2017 subsumed all the central excise duties and local levies.

Designed as an anti-evasion measure, the e-way bill system was rolled out on April 1, 2018, for moving goods worth over Rs 50,000 from one state to another.
