One of the most active volcanoes in Central America has erupted again, spewing lava and ash and forcing authorities in Guatemala City on Sunday to briefly close the country's largest airport and a major highway.

Guatemala's civil defense officials said 25 people have been killed when Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted Sunday, belching ash and rock and forcing the airport to close.

Employees of Guatemala's civil aviation authority blocked access on Wednesday to the country's main airport, La Aurora in Guatemala City, in a protest over pay and layoffs, local media reported.

Guatemala's Fuego volcano calmed down on Sunday after an eruption blanketed nearby towns in ash, the nation's volcano monitor reported.
