Gujjar protesters in the state ended their eight-day-old strike today, after the state government gave a written assurance that it would take every legal step at its disposal to ensure that the community gets 5% reservation in jobs and educational institutes even if it gets stuck in court.

The members of Gujjar community called off their agitation on Saturday after getting a written assurance from the Rajasthan government that it will stand by them if the bill giving five per cent reservation to the community faces legal hurdles.

The Congress government in Rajasthan passed a bill earmarking 5 per cent reservation for Gujjars in jobs and education today amid a huge protest by the community, which has paralysed road and rail traffic since last week in parts of the state.

Rajasthan Government has forwarded a bill proposing five per cent reservation to gujjars and other communities under Special Backward Class (SBC) to the Governor for his consent.

The first day of Rajasthan Assembly began today with uproar by the Opposition over issues of corruption and Lalit Modi controversy, even as the government introduced 15 bills including separate legislations providing reservation to Gujjars and economically weaker section.

Gujjars in Rajasthan led by Colonel Bainsla are again on the warpath. They are angry that though the Quota bill that gave them 5 per cent reservations was passed last year, they are yet to get any benefits.

In Rajasthan, Gujjars will now get the reservations they have long been demanding.

Rajasthan Governor S K Singh has given his assent to the quota bill, which gives 5% reservation for Gujjars.
