Gutka Pan Masala Ban

Noting the "direct and pernicious impact" of smokeless tobacco on public health, the Delhi High Court Monday affirmed a ban imposed by the food safety commissioner on manufacture, storage and sale of gutka, pan masala, flavoured tobacco.

The Delhi High Court has quashed the notifications of the Food Safety Commissioner prohibiting the manufacture, storage, and sale of gutka, pan masala, tobacco, and similar products in the national capital in the interest of public health.

The Jharkhand government on Tuesday extended the prohibition on the manufacture, storage, sale and distribution of Gutka and Pan Masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients till July 25, next year.

The Uttar Pradesh government has banned the manufacture and sale of pan masala, saying the move will help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The Assam government on Wednesday banned the manufacture, distribution and sale of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine for a period of one year with immediate effect.

In 2013, the manufacture, storage and sale of the chewable forms of tobacco, including gutka and pan masala, were banned by the Tamil Nadu government.
