Police in Assam have unearthed a multi-crore scam and busted eight illegal call centres, which used to scam Indians and people from other countries in the name of offering technical support. Three people have been arrested and 191 have been detained.

The number of people affected by the Assam floods rose to 52 lakh today, with as many as 1.5 lakh being moved to relief centres amid a red alert issued by the government. Five more died today, taking the total number of people killed in the floods to 20, even as the Indian Army was called in to assist in rescue operations.

An 88-year-old man allegedly killed himself in Sontoli in Assam's Kamrup district, about 70 km away from state capital Guwahati, because he feared being sent to detention centre after he was called for verification for the National Register of Citizens of India last week. The locals found his body today.
