At least 25 Iraqi fighters have been killed repelling a major three-day offensive by the Islamic State group in the western region of Haditha, security sources said today.

Iraqi security forces and Sunni tribal fighters launched an offensive to dislodge Islamic State militants near the western outpost of Haditha in a bid to secure a key supply route to an important military base, police and tribal sources said.

The US military says it's launched airstrikes around Haditha Dam in western Iraq, targeting Islamic State insurgents for the first time in that area as the group tries to capture the vital dam.

The militants who have overrun large parts of Iraq are now battling ferociously to capture one of the country's vital resources, water.

The lone Marine convicted in his squad's killing of two dozen unarmed civilians in one of the Iraq War's defining moments escaped jail time Tuesday after defending his order to raid homes in Haditha as a necessary act "to keep the rest of my Marines alive."
