Akhilesh Yadav asks centre to raise UP's quota of Haj pilgrims

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has requested the central government to increase the quota of Haj pilgrims from the state. In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, Mr Yadav requested that the state be allowed to send at least 32,532 people on Haj, maintaining the quota of 2011.

The government has brought about changes in the Haj pilgrimage programme and a key one is that all pilgrims must have a valid passport, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Kerala Government receives nearly 50,000 applications for Haj

A total of 49429 applications have been received this year for Haj pilgrimage 2012 in Kerala.The draw of lots for the pilgrimage was inaugurated by Kerala Haj and industries minister, PK Kunhalikutty at the Haj house in the nearby Karippur in Malappuram district.The quota for this year's Haj pilgrimage from Kerala is 6487.
