The government on Friday said the third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts has come into force in 55 new districts in 16 states and one Union territory.

Sale of gold jewellery and gold artefacts hallmarked with only a six-digit alphanumeric HUID, union identification number, will be permitted from April 1, the government said on Saturday.

The rollout of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery in 256 districts has been smooth so far and the process of expanding it to all districts of the country is now underway, according to the Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Hallmarked jewellery can be sold only by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registered jewellers and their details can be obtained from the BIS website

Hallmarking of gold jewellery is a must from today, in a move aimed at ensuring the purity of gold and standard rates for customers.

The Centre on Tuesday said mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts will come into force from June 16 in a phased manner and initially will be implemented in 256 districts.

In November 2019, the government had announced that hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts would be made mandatory across the country from January 15, 2021

Analysts say that listed jewellery retailers and makers will benefit from government's move for mandatorily hallmarking gold jewellery.

The government on Monday extended its deadline for mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery to June 15 from its previous deadline of June 1.

Mandatory hallmarking process of gold jewellery and artefacts will begin from today, Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in a press release.

Hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts will be made mandatory across the country from January 15, 2021, to ensure the purity of the precious metal, Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced on Friday.

The department of consumer affairs will issue a notification by January 15, 2020, for making gold hallmarking mandatory.

Indian Association of Hallmarking Centres, which represents around 350 hallmarking centres across India, estimates that only 40 per cent of jewellery is hallmarked in the country.

The UK has only four assay offices but overall penetration of hallmarking is high because it is mandatory on all jewellery above a gram.
