Heat Stress Tolerance

Just as individual humans handle stress differently, so do corals. Even coral colonies of the same species, growing side by side, vary in their tolerance to pressures such as heatwaves.

New research shows that the human body's ability to tolerate heat and humidity is lower than previously thought, with a critical wet-bulb temperature threshold closer to 31 degrees Celsius.

The researchers at the IIT Delhi are conducting a study to develop India-specific heat stress tolerance thresholds to formulate a plan for heat management as they believe such stress might increase due to global warming.

The partner institutes in this project include IIT Kanpur, IISER Bhopal, RKMVU Kolkata, SRU Chennai, IIPH Gandhinagar.
