Helmets Compulsory For Women

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi hit the streets last night to figure out how safe the city was for women after dark. Riding pillion on a two-wheeler with another woman, Ms Bedi travelled "incognito" on her round of the union territory, a dupatta partially covering her face.

Women riding pillion on two-wheelers in the capital will now have to wear helmets as the new rules came into force Thursday. Those belonging to the Sikh community have been exempted on religious grounds.

It is now mandatory for women travelling on two-wheelers, driving or riding pillion, to wear helmets in the national capital. The Delhi government issued a notification on Friday inviting objections and suggestions from public within 30 days.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to make helmet wearing compulsory for pillion riders irrespective of their gender and religion, after the city government informed it that motor vehicle rules would be amended to make it compulsory for women to wear helmets.
