The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has advised top officials of airline companies that the government will be forced to take concrete action if there is an unbridled hike in air fares, especially in the sector where Go First has stopped operation.

The government has the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to conduct a detailed study of airfares charged by domestic airlines in high density routes during the past five years, amid allegations that carriers steeply hike ticket prices during peak travel seasons.

With the defending champions India set to take on Australia in the second semi-final of the 2015 ICC World Cup at Sydney on Thursday, airlines have hiked their fares substantially for Down Under.

The price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) or jet fuel was on Wednesday hiked by over 2.7 per cent - the second increase in rates in one month.

The fare hike was triggered by Chennai-headquartered low-cost carrier SpiceJet, which increased fares by a hefty 30 per cent earlier this week citing rise in input costs in the wake of the rupee fall and a 6.9 per cent increase in the jet fuel prices by oil marketing firms from September 1.

Air India hiked passenger fares by up to 25 percent on all domestic routes today following a sharp increase in the price of air turbine fuel (ATF). It may also raise fares on international routes.

The hike comes a day after Jet Airways and SpiceJet announced similar hikes in their airfares.

Air fares are likely to increase by 10 to 15 per cent following a steep hike in jet fuel prices, according to the travel industry.
