After nearly two days of controversy over his comment linking karma and life-threatening diseases like cancer, Assam Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he had been quoted out of context and offered an "unconditional apology" for any pain it might have caused.

His former colleagues in the Congress are keeping Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP on the defensive with tweet barbs since yesterday for saying earlier this week that "cancer is divine justice for sins."

Congress leader P Chidambaram today denounced Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks that some people suffer from life-threatening diseases because of sins committed in the past, saying "that is what switching parties does to a person".

In comments criticised as extremely insensitive, Assam health minister and the BJP's star north-east strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma has linked accidents and life-threatening diseases like cancer to "sin... past life... and divine justice."
