Amid a spike in COVID-19 infections in some parts of the country, the Centre today asked states and union territories to consider imposing local restrictions in public observance of the upcoming festivals and limit or do away with mass gatherings for effective control of the pandemic.

Restrictions under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which bars assembly of more than four people, have been imposed till april 30 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 in view of upcoming festivals.
