Hookah Bars Banned

The Haryana Assembly on Monday passed a bill that prohibits opening or running hookah bars or serving hookah to customers in any place, including eating houses, in the state.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has imposed a total ban on serving hookah in hotels, restaurants, bars and commercial establishments in Haryana. Teams will be formed to stop the serving of Hookah in bars, pubs and restaurants.

The ban comes months after Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta raised a demand that commercial establishments stop serving hookah.

To tackle the threat of young people getting addicted to tobacco, the Karnataka government is planning to ban hookah bars and increase the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products to 21.

The Delhi High Court has allowed for the time being the use of herbal hookah in restaurants and pubs in the national capital, saying that COVID-19 restrictions cannot be permitted to continue at the cost of livelihood.

In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, Chandigarh on Monday imposed a ban on the operation of hookah bars in the Union Territory from December 14 to February 11.

The district magistrate (DM) of Gurgaon on Friday again invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) for banning hookah bars in the district, an official said.

While conducting a surprise check at Zaza restaurant, Bandra Reclamation, at 11 pm on Monday, Social Service (SS) branch of Mumbai police found a hookah bar operating out of the establishment. Among the patrons rounded up was allegedly state health minister Suresh Shetty's son Kshitij.
