Exemption from the GST has been given to imports of specified defence goods that are not manufactured in India.

The Centre on Wednesday said it will certainly take up the issue of "hefty" GST on hotel rooms' tariff in the meeting of its council as it impacts the tourism industry.

Currently GST at the rate of 28% is charged on hotel rooms with tariffs over Rs 7,500 and 18% on rooms which are priced between Rs 2,500-7,500.

Currently, GST is levied at 12 per cent on non-AC restaurants, while it is 18 per cent for air-conditioned ones.

In cases where the room tariff is Rs 2,500 and above but less than Rs 7,500 per room per day, a 18 per cent GST would be charged.

Union Minister Arun Jaitley has said hotel rooms costing upto 7,500 will come under the 18 per cent slab on Goods and Services Tax. Rooms with higher charges will be taxed at 28 per cent.
