More than 50 people were killed in Yemen in the past two days in fighting pitting an Arab coalition against Houthi fighters backed by troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, medical sources and residents said today.

Jets belonging to a Saudi-led coalition accidentally killed at least 20 people at a wake in northern Yemen on Sunday, local tribesmen said, as Arab warplanes pounded Houthi positions and allied forces behind a missile strike in which dozens of Gulf Arab soldiers died.

Houthi forces pulled back from a central Aden district today and warplanes from the Saudi-led coalition dropped weapons and medical aid to fighters defending the southern Yemeni city, a last symbolic foothold of the country's absent president.

Yemeni anti-aircraft guns opened fire at an unidentified plane flying over President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's compound in the southern city of Aden today and appeared to force it away, witnesses said.
