The world's largest facility for extracting carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere is up and running in Iceland.

Icelandic authorities were on Tuesday preparing to build defence walls around a geothermal power plant in the southwestern part of the country that they hope will protect it from lava flows amid concerns of an imminent volcanic eruption.

Climeworks AG is planning to build its direct air capture plant in 18-24 months, with capacity to suck 36,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from the air. This will be a 10-fold increase from Climeworks' existing DAC plant, currently the world's largest.

The world's largest plant designed to suck carbon dioxide out of the air and turning it into rock started running on Wednesday, the companies behind the plant said.
