In face of stiff disapproval from the public and the medical fraternity, the Karnataka government has decided to withdraw the controversial 8% "luxury tax" on patients treated in Intensive Care Units in the state's hospitals.

If you're in hospital in Bengaluru, this is unlikely to help you recover. Patients being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of any hospital where the nightly charge is more than Rs 1,000 (pretty much most hospitals) could soon have to pay an extra 8 per cent as luxury tax.
