The raging water from the Idukki reservoir in Kerala has left behind a trail of destruction along its path. On Thursday, Mohanan P and his family were fast asleep in their home in Kanjikuzhy village in Idukki district. At around 3 am, he woke up to the sound of his dog barking, usual for that hour.

So far, 29 people have been killed in Kerala as heavy rain and landslides hit the state since Wednesday. The situation came to a head after the shutters of one of the dams of the Idukki reservoir had to be opened to control the rising water level because of incessant rain. One of the dams in the reservoir were opened for the first time in 26 years.

The shutters of the Cheruthoni dam - which is one of the dams in the reservoir - were opened for the first time in 26 years yesterday, with the water levels in the reservoir dangerously close to full capacity.
