Idukki Dam Maximum

After heavy rain for the last one week triggered floods and landslides in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday sent an SOS to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his Tamil Nadu counterpart E Palaniswami on the rising water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam.

Rain-hit Idduki district in Kerala is bracing for surplussing of Mullaperiyar Dam as officials issued an alert for people living on the Periyar River banks with the water level in the reservoir crossing the 137 feet mark against its maximum of 142 feet today.

In a warning about the rising level of water in Kerala's Idukki dam, the state electricity board has issued an orange alert. There is a possibility that water has to be released on trial basis for one or two hours. But officials said the people need not panic. If the shutters of the dam have to be opened, an alert will be given well in advance.

With inflow into the Idukki dam thinning today, authorities put on hold the plan to open its shutters as the chances of the water level touching the maximum limit receded, much to the relief of people living downstream.
