A new amendment bill of the Centre that proposes the President will be Visitor to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) with powers to audit their functioning, order probes and appoint as well as remove directors.

"At present, there is no proposal under consideration of the Government to grant further autonomy to IITs on the lines of IIMs," the minister said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is speaking at a conference attended by Vice Chancellors and Directors of over 350 higher education institutions.

The Rajya Sabha today passed a bill, extending greater autonomy to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) by restricting the government's role in their functioning and granting them power to award degrees to their graduates.

The bill grants statutory powers to all the IIMs in their running including appointment of directors, faculty members besides giving them powers to award degrees instead of post graduate diplomas

The controversial Draft Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bill that seeks to curtail autonomy of the IIMs is likely to be tabled in the upcoming monsoon session of parliament by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry, say sources.

The IIMs have historically been given more autonomy than many Indian institutions, and they have handled this freedom with a great deal of care.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal will meet with the IIM directors on Friday to discuss several issues including autonomy to the elite institutes.
