R Chandrashekhar, who was conferred Distinguished Alumnus award of IIT Bombay in 2010, backed the fee increase, saying it would also exert pressure on the IITs to make their programmes more market- and research-orientated to keep abreast with the changing times.

There will be an extensive increase in non-tuition fee for all students on the campus starting with the autumn semester 2017-18. The new fee structure proposes an increase of 300% in Hostel Rent among other hikes.

Students at IIT Bombay have temporarily suspended their hunger strike after the college director reportedly assured them that a committee will be set up to discuss the fee hike and examine a possible reduction in fees.

IIT Council will meet in Mumbai on April 28 to review the decision taken by MHRD for increasing the tuition fee. The apex bodies of all the IITs would meet to take a decision about the 122 per cent hike in tuition fee and awarding financial concessions to special category students taken by MHRD when it was led by Smriti Irani.
