Five labourers were killed and two others are feared dead after debris of a quartz stone quarry fell on them in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district on Wednesday, police said.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa today said "merciless" action will taken against those involved in illegal acts that led to the blast at a quarry in Chikkaballapura killing six people.

The man, who was arrested in connection with the mine mishap in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district a fortnight ago, has admitted that he was the owner of the 370-foot-deep illegal quarry, police said Sunday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached over 500 properties, with a market value of about Rs 200 crore, in connection with its money laundering probe in the alleged illegal granite quarrying scam of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

A day after NDTV exposed thriving illegal mining activity in and around the protected Gir wildlife sanctuary, the district administration of Gir Somnath raided illegal mining units and sealed three major quarries in the area.

Trained volunteers will visit each quarry and upload its exact location, images, ownership details and so on to a common database using GPS and a particular app.

Tamil Nadu government today ordered a probe to ascertain if irregularities have occurred in 71 large mineral quarries engaged in extraction of beach minerals in the state and suspended operations till its completion.

Ashish Kumar, who was the District Collector of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu till two days ago, was handed his transfer order on Tuesday evening. Earlier that day, he had conducted raids on mineral quarries owned by local mining barons in two villages in the district.

The Centre has sought a report from the Samajwadi Party-led Uttar Pradesh government on the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nath, who had cracked down on sand mafia involved in rampant quarrying along the banks of Yamuna river.

Former Union minister M K Alagiri's son Durai Dayanidhi, who has been granted anticipatory bail in the alleged granite quarrying scam, today filed a plea in the Madras High Court Bench in Madurai seeking a direction to a lower court to return his passport to enable him go abroad in connection with his business Interests.

As part of its crackdown on illegal granite quarrying, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption officials today raided the Geology and Mines Department office at the collectorate in Madurai.

The Madurai police have asked immigration authorities to issue a look out circular for union minister MK Alagiri's son Durai Dayanidhi and eleven others in the illegal granite quarrying case in Madurai.
