Despite severe restrictions on entry at railway stations without confirmed tickets in view of the coronavirus pandemic, over 27 lakh people were caught travelling on trains ticketless in the last fiscal, an RTI query has revealed.

The Railway Board has instructed its zones to convert old coaches into rail-themed restaurants to generate revenue and provide employment. The board in its letter has said rail museums and heritage parks that witness substantial footfall have the potential to increase its revenue and generate additional employment by opening rail coach restaurants.

Indian Railways will install CCTV surveillance systems at more than 900 stations under the Nirbhaya Fund at an approved cost of Rs 500 crore to strengthen security at rail premises.
