Hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh appealed to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to call off their indefinite shutdown in the Darjeeling Hills for a separate Gorkhaland state, the Morcha announced on Tuesday evening that they will suspend the bandh from 6 am on Wednesday.

A massive search operation was launched today in Darjeeling and adjoining areas for Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung, even as the indefinite shutdown in the hills entered its 80th day.

On the 57th day of the indefinite bandh in the hills, Darjeeling woke up to find an office of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in the heart of town burnt down. Situated in the central Chowk Bazaar area, it was the Morcha's town committee office. Nobody knows who set it on fire in the dead of night.

All eyes are on a meeting of all the parties of the Darjeeling hills, to be held in New Delhi today over Gorkhaland, while Gorkha Janmukti Morcha or GJM chief Bimal Gurung on Monday said only his party could withdraw the indefinite shutdown in the hills, which is going on for 47 days.
