A day after 17 men, staff of a sparsely populated apartment complex in Chennai, were arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl, the Madras High Court has asked for the girl to be sent to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

India has seen "dramatic" improvements in the opportunities available to the girl child, a United Nations report said today while showcasing the country as an example to be replicated worldwide for bettering the condition of their youthful populations.

The Supreme Court today ordered Yahoo!, Google and Micrsoft's Bing to stop displaying ads for sex determination tests as India tries to battle its dwindling number of girls.
