Centre has introduced 2 changes to the prevailing power tariff system and now across the country consumers can save up to 20 per cent in power bills by planning usage during solar hours or daytime.

As the government continues to focus on increasing renewable energy capacity, solar and wind power tariffs are likely to dip below Rs 2 per unit in the next 2-3 years, a senior official of transmission firm Sterlite Power said

"India gets lowest wind tariff of Rs 2.64 per kWh (unit) in the second wind auction of 1,000 MW," the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said.

The cost of solar equipment was around Rs 20 crore per MW and tariff was around Rs 15 per unit about 7-8 years ago.

In January, the solar power tariff had touched a record low with Finland-based energy firm Fortum Finnsurya Energy quoting Rs 4.34 a unit to bag the mandate to set up a 70 MW solar plant under NTPC's Bhadla solar park tender.

ACME bagged the project after placing the financial bid for a tariff of Rs 4.67 per unit for 25 years. It will be commissioned within 13 months from the date of signing of PPA with NTPC and is expected to generate around 2,500 million units during its tenure and supply power to Telangana Discom through NTPC.
