A long-standing tradition was changed at the 56th annual convocation ceremony of IIT Madras on Monday, with the institute prescribing Indian attire for graduating students and research scholars instead of the distinctive gowns worn worldwide

The students of the Indian Institute of Technology-ISM (Dhanbad) shun western attires for their convocation as they turned up wearing Kurta-payjamas and saris. Not only the clothes, they even took their convocation pledge in Sanskrit. Even the director of the institute Rajiv Shekhar was clad in a kurta-pyjama.

Indian School of Mines (ISM) in Dhanbad would wear Indian attires and not the traditional gown that they had been wearing for 92 years, during its convocation tomorrow.

Keen to shed what it calls a "colonial tradition", the prestigious IIT Kanpur has directed its students to don ethnic attire like kurtas, pyjamas and churidaars during their convocation ceremony, in place of the ceremonial black robes and head gear.
