Indian Prisoners Of War In Pakistan

Indian Army chief Gen Manoj Pande on Wednesday said the treatment of Pakistani prisoners of war post-1971 war was so good that they wished that their officers were as good as their Indian counterparts in ensuring the welfare of the troops.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a plea of the wife of an Indian Army officer seeking repatriation of her husband and other Army officers believed to be held under illegal detention as Prisoners of War by Pakistan since the 1971 war.

The Supreme Court has sought the Centre's response today on a plea seeking repatriation of 54 Indian army officers who have been detained by Pakistan as Prisoners of War since the 1971 war.

The Centre has told Supreme Court that there are 83 missing defence personnel including 62 Prisoners of the War of 1965 and 1971 for whom India is seeking their release and repatriation from Pakistan through diplomatic and other available channels.

Pakistan has not acknowledged the presence of any missing Indian defence personnel or Prisoners of War (PoWs) in its custody so far, despite consistent efforts from India to ensure their release and repatriation from the neighbouring country, the government said on Wednesday.

Captain Saurabh Kalia was taken prisoner during the Kargil War between India and Pakistan. His mutilated body was returned to India on June 9, 1999.
