BSNL will migrate 30,000 wi-fi hotspots to the PM-WANI framework by June, stated a senior telecom department official. Indian Railways will soon follow this and has already created an ambitious blueprint for the migration.

The railways has "dropped" a project to provide Internet connection in trains because it was not cost effective, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday.

All 15 railway stations in the Kashmir valley have been integrated under the wireless fidelity or Wi-Fi network of Indian Railways.

RailTel already provides free wi-fi service at more than 5,950 stations in the country, and the facility can be availed by anyone with a smartphone and an active connection after an OTP-based verification.

RailTel, the Miniratna PSU, said that the free Wi-Fi services at 415 stations will continue even after its contract period with Google expires in May 2020.
