External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has met Italian President Sergio Mattarella and other senior leaders here and discussed ways to further develop the bilateral strategic partnership in areas like defence, cyber security and counter-terrorism.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday met her Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni and discussed cooperation in key areas of trade and counter-terrorism, the first high-level contact between the two countries after the UN court's verdict on the Italian marines issue.

The European Union and India failed on Wednesday to defuse a long-running row over two Italian marines accused of murder and the case moved to an international tribunal after four years of diplomatic squabbles.

Amid continued stand-off between India and Italy over the issue of two Italian marines, accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012, Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini today left for home reportedly for "consultations."
