CCTV cameras installed in the "ghat'' (hilly) section of Mumbai-Pune route for monitoring during monsoon proved useful Thursday night as a train was stopped well in time before it could hit a fallen boulder.

In a boost to the railways' cleanliness and safety drives, the cash-strapped public transporter has received Rs 1,655 crore from the government for the installation of CCTVs at stations and bio-toilets in trains across the country.

Shan-e-Punjab Express today became country's first train to have CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, as part of Railways' efforts to strengthen security of passengers particularly women travellers.

To curb crimes against women travelers, Railways today said an all-India mobile application service will be launched through which immediate help from the Railway Protection Force could be availed.
