The US government on Thursday released a mammoth, long-awaited trove of secret files on the killing of president John F. Kennedy, offering intriguing new insights into events surrounding one of the most infamous assassinations in history.

The FBI took a major step toward getting a new headquarters Friday when the government launched a formal search for a company to build its campus at one of three sites, in Greenbelt, Landover or Springfield, in exchange for the J. Edgar Hoover Building and as much as $1.8 billion in cash.

Jack Ely, whose 1963 song "Louie Louie" was so unintelligible that the US government investigated it for secret messages, has died aged 71, his family said Tuesday.

The fitness tests, which started at the end of last year, are a return to a tradition begun by the FBI's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, who obsessed about his agents' weight, as well his own considerable girth.
