Jaguar Land Rover has plans to gradually resume production from May 18, 2020 starting with manufacturing plants in Solihull in the UK as well as in Slovakia and Austria.

The move by Tata Motors, which owns the British luxury car brands Jaguar and Land Rover, comes as the state recorded the highest number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in India.

Luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover said late on Thursday it would temporarily suspend production at its UK manufacturing facilities from next week to curb the coronavirus' spread.

Britain's biggest automaker Jaguar Land Rover plans to keep making vehicles at its domestic factories until at least the end of the week despite the impact from coronavirus which has shut many other car plants.

JLR CEO Ralf Speth said the company has enough supplies to ensure production for the next two weeks, but from the third week onwards it remains risky and could even mean plant closures. "We have flown parts in suitcases just to make sure we have all the parts but for the third week, we still have parts missing," Mr Speth said.

Car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover said Friday that it will make electric cars at its central England plant, securing thousands of jobs in a major boost to post-Brexit Britain.

The plant was built with an initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles and started by taking over production of the carmaker's Discovery model.

JLR employs just under 39,000 workers at its UK sites - Castle Bromwich, Solihull and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and Halewood on Merseyside. The plan to pause production follows an announcement earlier this month that the company is to cut 4,500 jobs in a bid to cut costs of up to 2.5 billion pounds.

The company said in response to adjustments in vehicle production schedules, the Engine Manufacturing Centre will take a temporary pause in production.
