A Japanese court has awarded millions of dollars in compensation to a group of teachers who were punished for refusing to sing the country's anthem, the group said today as it condemned nationalism in education.

After terming the Japanese national anthem as 'ugly', China's Sun Yang said his comment was misunderstood by the journalists during Asian Games in Incheon.

Japan's head coach Takayuki Umehara told AFP there had been no angry reaction to Olympic champion Sun telling Chinese media: "The Japanese national anthem sounds ugly."

Double Olympic champion Sun Yang told Chinese media he had taken great pleasure in helping the men's 4x100 freestyle relay team beat the Japanese on Wednesday before indulging in a spot of diplomatic jousting.
