Freebies galore and populist schemes under the popular 'Amma' brand became the hallmark of late J Jayalalithaa's tenure as Chief Minister, helping her steamroll arch-rival M Karunanidhi's DMK in this year's Assembly polls.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa today exhorted her party men to explain the development work and welfare schemes of her government, the party's electoral promises including freebies and remind people of the "unholy" alliance between the DMK and Congress.

Defending her promises of freebies like mobile phones, set-top boxes, 50 per cent subsidy for women to buy scooters and mopeds in the AIADMK manifesto, party chief Jayalalithaa today said such schemes are intended to "uplift" the disadvantaged, as her party is "pro-poor".

As she tours Tamil Nadu seeking a re-election as Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa makes it a point to list the multiple freebies, or handouts, her government has distributed.
