The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday told the Madras High Court that late chief minister Jayalalithaa was not a convict in the wealth case after the Supreme Court had abated charges against her and hence, there was no bar on constructing a memorial for her.

The Madras High Court on Monday asked the Income Tax department, if late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had any legal heir or if she had left behind any will as it adjourned an appeal over a 20-year-old wealth tax case related to her.

The corruption case in which VK Sasikala has been convicted today was, in fact, centered on whether J Jayalalithaa misused her first term as Chief Minister in the 1990s to accumulate a vast fortune of real estate, cash and jewellery through a maze of companies which were owned by Ms Sasikala and two of her male relatives.

The Supreme Court bench of Justices PC Ghosh and Amitava Roy, concurrently, held AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala guilty of helping former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa amass illicit wealth worth over 60 crores in the 1990s and has sentenced her to four years imprisonment.
