Putting up wall posters and staging dharnas within 100 metres of the academic buildings at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) can lead to a fine of up to Rs 20,000 or expulsion, according to a new manual.

Jawaharlal Nehru University has withdrawn the rules that stipulated students can face a fine of Rs 50,000 for physical violence, abuse and holding dharna on campus, its vice-chancellor said on Thursday.

Students can be imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 for holding dharnas and face admission cancellation or a fine of up to Rs 30,000 for resorting to violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University, its latest rules stipulate.

A section of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has claimed that the administration has imposed thousands of rupees fines on them for participating in protests and "banned" them from registering for the next semester.

“Many residents of the hostels are being fined Rs 2,000 for keeping 'unauthorised guests' in their rooms. However, it should be clarified that a majority of such unauthorised persons are students of JNU (from 2021 Batch) who have not yet been allotted hostel by the university,” the letter stated

The Delhi High Court said on January 24 that JNU students, who have not yet registered for the new academic year, may do so under the old hostel manual.
