New laws to punish rape and other crimes against women will be shared with Parliament today for discussion and debate. After a meeting with political leaders earlier on Monday, the cabinet cleared the anti-rape bill the same evening - the age of consent will be 18, and not 16, as it had been originally proposed.

Despite objections by women's groups, President Pranab Mukherjee today signed the ordinance on sexual assault which was passed by the union cabinet on Friday.
