A businessman was arrested Tuesday by the Karnataka commercial taxes department for allegedly evading GST of Rs 42 crore by raising fake invoices of Rs 245 crore in the name of deceased and fictituous people.

A Nasscom official made the observation in light the recent issuing of state commercial tax department notices to about 50 Amazon dealers for not paying value added tax.

Negligence of officials in the Commercial Tax department has deprived the state of Rs 758 crore since 1999. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Karnataka Legislature has recommended action against these officials who have allegedly failed to collect tax arrears from individuals and traders stating that the defaulters were absconding.

Dealers going any length to evade tax have begun to feel the heat, with Enforcement Wing of the State Commercial Tax Department tightening the screws in the system to eliminate fraudulent practices.
