Former chief justice of Karnataka High Court Y Bhaskar Rao will on Thursday take over as the state's Lokayukta (ombudsman), filling up the post lying vacant for over 17 months.

Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said on Sunday that the state would get a new Lokayukta in the next 15 days. Gowda said he has written to the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Justice Vikramjit Sen and leaders of the opposition in both houses of state legislature, Siddaramaiah and Motamma.

After its vain bid to install former Kerala Chief Justice S R Bannurmath as the Lokayukta, Karnataka Government is set to start afresh tomorrow the consultation process for picking a new candidate and hoped to complete the exercise in about ten days.

Karnataka is caught in a classic case of letter of law versus spirit of law over appointment of a new Lokayukta for four months and an early solution to the issue is not in sight.

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Shivaraj V Patil was today appointed the new Lokayukta of Karnataka. He will take over from N Santosh Hegde, who welcomed Mr Patil's appointment as a "very good choice".
