Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film "Padmaavat", that has provoked anger among Rajput groups, cannot be banned by states, the Supreme Court said today. The producers of the film, which is to be released on January 25, had moved court against the ban by four states - Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

At least 159 activists of the Rajasthan-based Karni Sena were arrested on Friday while protesting outside the Central Board of Film Certification's office here against the clearance given to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavat", earlier titled "Padmavati".

"Padmavat", cleared by the censor board and expected to hit the theatres on January 25, will not be screened in Rajasthan, said the state's home minister today. Gulab Chand Kataria said the film would not be released in Rajasthan as the orders of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje stand.

The censor board asked the erstwhile Mewar royal family to join a panel to help certify Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavati", which had angered Rajput community leaders for allegedly portraying the queen in a 'bad light', a member of the family said today.
