Amid a crisis over thousands of tonnes of apple rotting in stranded trucks along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to allow held-up trucks to move towards Jammu tonight.

Scores of south Kashmir-bound trucks engaged in ferrying apples to other parts of the country have been stopped on Jammu-Srinagar national highway by police in the wake of the killing of Katra-based driver on Monday evening at Kalinwal village in the terror-infested region.

The excise department have foiled a bid to smuggle drugs in apple boxes from Kashmir to Punjab and impounded a truck with 120 kg of poppy seeds in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, officials said on Tuesday.

A truck driver loading apples into his vehicle was killed by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag on Monday, police said. This is the fourth attack on truckers transporting apples from the Kashmir region in the last two weeks.

Two truck drivers who had come to transport apples in Kashmir's Shopian district were shot dead by terrorists on Thursday evening and their truck was set on fire. Another truck driver was injured in the attack.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval today said easing of restrictions from all parts of Jammu and Kashmir depends on how Pakistan behaves. The state has been under partial lockdown since the first week of August after the centre scrapped special from Jammu and Kashmir and divided it into two union territories.

More than 700 truckloads of apple have been transported from Jammu and Kashmir to wholesale markets in North India over the past two days with normal trading activities resuming in the Valley, Army officers said on Thursday.
