Kashmir Essential Supplies

Amid reports of disruptions in the supply of gas and other essential commodities in Jammu and Kashmir after heavy snowfall, Lt Governor GC Murmu has sought a detailed report on the availability of essential commodities in affected areas, an official spokesman said today.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway is closed for the fifth day due to multiple landslides at Panthal and Ramban, triggered by heavy rains and snow, cutting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. Over 2,000 trucks, mostly carrying essential supplies, and 500 passenger vehicles are stranded.

The strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway was open on Monday for one-way traffic as more than 600 stranded vehicles, carrying essential supplies to the Valley, were cleared on Sunday evening.

One-way traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Wednesday. Earlier, over 1,000 trucks carrying supplies reached Srinagar overnight from Jammu.

With floods rendering the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in-operational for 12 consecutive days today, Valley residents are facing an acute shortage of essential commodities even as people in some areas of north and south Kashmir accused the administration of concentrating only on the Srinagar city.

Heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures in the Kashmir valley have blocked several arterial roads that bring supplies to Srinagar. One-way traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway was restored on Tuesday, allowing trucks carrying essential supplies to proceed to Srinagar.
