Kashmiri Students Attacked

A 22-year-old Kashmiri student was allegedly attacked with a sharp object by an auto-rickshaw driver following an argument over fare in southeast Delhi's New Friends Colony, police said on Tuesday.

NC leader Omar Abdullah on Friday said the behaviour of lawyers in Agra towards the three Kashmiri students, arrested for allegedly celebrating Pakistan's win over India at the T20 World Cup, was unacceptable and the role of police is suspected.

The students, who were recently arrested in Agra, Uttar Pradesh for supporting the Pakistan cricket team during the T20 World Cup match, were roughed up when they were produced in front of a magistrate in the city today.

Several Kashmiri students at an engineering college in Punjab's Sangrur alleged that they were assaulted late last night moments after India lost its opening T20 World Cup match against Pakistan.

Punjab Police has set up a help desk for prompt redressal of complaints filed by Kashmiris days after Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh assured full support for the students from the valley.

After reports of attacks on Kashmiris across the country, the Centre on Friday asked all states to ensure their security. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an advisory to all states following a directive of the Supreme Court, which took up a petition in this regard.
