Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday pulled up officials of the Delhi Development Authority or DDA and a private builder over poor living conditions at a transit camp for dwellers of Kathputli Colony.

The parliament today passed a bill to protect slums and unauthorised colonies in the national capital region from punitive action till a framework for orderly arrangements are in place.

Modifying its stay order, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday allowed the Delhi Development Authority to demolish the slums of those residents of West Delhi's Kathputli colony who were eligible for relocation and had moved out voluntarily.

Tucked away from the glare of visitors to India's capital, just 6 km from the manicured lawns of the Parliament building, thousands of its citizens live in the most unliveable of conditions, passing their days surrounded by filth, garbage, open defecation, and little room to live.

Hundreds of women and children are standing against bulldozers at a colony in west Delhi where shanties will be torn down to make way for multi-storey housing. Some 3,000 families of the 'Kathputli' colony, home to puppet makers, drummers, magicians and artisans from 13 states, are protesting against a move to shift them for the construction.
