More than 50 people have died and lakhs have displaced after heavy monsoon rains led to flooding in different parts of the country. Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala are the worst-hit states where rescue operations have been launched to evacuate people to safety.

Kerala has suffered a loss of Rs 40,000 crore as per initial estimates in the rains that ravaged it last month, State Industries minister E P Jayarajan said on Wednesday.

The union government would extend further aid to Kerala to rehabilitate flood affected people once the full estimate of the damage was done, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Wednesday.

According to an initial estimation by the Kerala Library Council, around 228 libraries affiliated with the council have been either seriously damaged or washed away in the recent Kerala floods.

More than 11,000 claims worth an estimated Rs 1,200 crore have been filed by flood-affected people with the four public sector insurance companies in Kerala, a top official said today.
