Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia hills are on high alert after two student union members were arrested on Wednesday following the deaths of two people in the state last week.

The Meghalaya government has appealed to all communities to maintain peace and harmony ahead of the festive season after the powerful Khasi Students' Union (KSU) on Wednesday put up posters racially profiling the Bengali community.

A member of the Khasi Students' Union or KSU was killed and several others were injured after clashes broke out on Friday between them and non-tribals in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills, 90 km from state capital Shillong. Mobile internet data and SMS service have been snapped in this remote area for 48 hours, sources have said.

Fearing an influx of what they are terming as National Register of Citizens (NRC) rejects from Assam into Meghalaya, the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) set up check points along the highway and border to keep "illegal migrants" away. Travellers from across the border are being stopped and asked about their citizenship status by KSU activists.
